About the work
Frank Sarno
I paint places the way they feel.
I’m a self-taught artist, and I’ve been drawing and painting since childhood. Over the years, I’ve developed a certain bold, loose and impressionistic style built around strong color, texture and suggestion. I want each painting to feel immediate and alive, while still leaving room for the viewer’s own memories and imagination.
New York has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it’s at the heart of much of my work. Times Square glowing on a wet night, Chinatown storefronts, Coney Island crowds, fire escapes, rooftops, bridges and quiet neighborhood streets, these are places I know and scenes I keep coming back to. Sometimes a familiar corner can bring back a whole chapter of your life.
Hong Kong is another story.
I’ve never been there, yet it has become one of my recurring subjects. Working from photographs, stories and my own imagination, I paint my interpretation of its streets, signs, markets and nighttime energy. Collectors who know Hong Kong have told me that my paintings capture something of its atmosphere. Hearing that from people who have actually been there is deeply meaningful to me, and it has encouraged me to keep exploring the subject in my own way.
I’m also drawn to classic films and memorable movie scenes. When I paint one I want to preserve the characters and drama that made the moment stay with me, while giving it my own color, texture and mood.
Whatever the subject, I want the painting to feel alive, as though something has just happened there, or is about to. I’m less interested in recording every detail than in capturing the feeling that makes a scene worth remembering. That combination of atmosphere, color and personal interpretation is what gives my work its character.
Over the years, commissions and social media have brought my work to a much wider audience. My paintings now hang in homes throughout the United States and overseas, including Japan and Thailand. Many collectors have returned for additional paintings, and some of those relationships have lasted for decades. I’m proud of that, not simply because it means people value my work, but because it means the paintings have continued to matter to them over time.
More than twenty years ago, a Thai family commissioned me to paint their young children. Years later, with the children grown, they recreated the original pose and sent me a photograph. My painting was still hanging on the wall behind them.
That’s the kind of thing that stays with me.
A painting can begin with a street, a photograph, a movie scene, a memory or simply an idea. But when it becomes part of someone else’s home and their own story, it takes on a life beyond anything I could have planned. That is what I hope each painting can offer: something distinctive, carefully made and lasting enough to become part of someone’s life.
